FAQs for First Pediatric Dental Exams

What should I tell my child prior to the first appointment?

Let your child look at our website! There are games, pictures of other children and pictures of our staff. Your child can get to know us before ever meeting us. This can help with the stress of being around “Strangers”.

It is really important to keep dental exams positive and upbeat. As a Pediatric Dental Practice, we are specially trained in communicating with children and making sure your child understands any actions we take. Dentistry doesn’t have to be scary!

Good Things to Say to your child:

  • Dr. McNutt and his Staff will count and check your teeth!
  • They might take pictures of your teeth with a special Tooth Camera!
  • They will be nice to you and always tell you what they are doing.

Refrain from using these words:

  • Shot
  • Needles
  • Drills
  • X-Rays
  • Scary
  • Painful
  • Hurt
  • Blood

Over preparing a young child is much worse than under preparing. Simply tell them they can trust Dr. McNutt and his staff. Remember, young people are very good at "reading" adults. If you are uneasy, they will sense it.

What should we expect during the first exam?

During your first exam, you and your child will get to know our staff. We will address your child’s dietary habits, general health, and home dental routines. We will count and clean the child’s teeth and may even take some cool pictures of their teeth! We want your child to be comfortable and happy when s/he comes to see Dr. McNutt and his Assistants!

What if my child is scared?Pediatric Dental Anxiety

A lot of children are nervous around new people and in new places. It is completely natural for your child to be a little nervous. We have toys, games and movies on in the waiting room to put your child at ease. We are specially trained to handle children of all ages and anxiety levels.

Things you can do:

  • Never tell your child bad experiences from your past.
  • Never talk negatively about Dentistry.
  • Never try to coax your child into brushing or flossing their teeth by threatening them with a trip to the dentist.
  • Make sure you communicate comforting words when speaking about Dentistry.
